Summary:
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion." This right, which begins the First Amendment, is an important cornerstone of American culture. Freedom to practice any religion one might choose,or no religion, isn't a guarantee in many countries around the world. This motivating book, a support to elementary social studies curricula, explains in accessible terms why this freedom became a part of the Bill of Rights and how it's been tested and interpreted over the years.

School Library Journal - 11/01/2025 Gr 5–8—These short guides to topics addressed in the Bill of Rights dedicate four titles to four different parts of the first amendment: freedom of religion, speech, the press, and to assemble. The title on the right to privacy discusses how some rights are implied by the Constitution, but not stated outright. Each book starts with an explanation of what the Constitution is and why the Bill of Rights was added. Some titles cover specific court cases heard by the Supreme Court relating to the topics, while others do not go into detail, but talk more generally about the court's role in interpreting the Bill of Rights. Written at a second-grade level, this series is recommended to students in grades five to eight and may be a good option for students preparing for an exam on the Constitution. VERDICT Simple guides that may support emerging readers in their academic requirements. - Copyright 2025 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
