Booklist - 12/01/2024 Rosa has waited excitedly for the day when she can perform with her mamiachi’s (mother’s) mariachi band. When the big day arrives, Rosa is worried about performing on stage. Her mother and her mariachi madrinas (godmothers) remind her of the amazing women mariachis that have come before her, including her namesake, Rosa Quirino, one of the first woman mariachi musicians in a predominately male music genre. Vibrant colors, as seen in the pink of their trajes de charro (mariachi attire), and lyrical descriptions of the mariachi music create an atmosphere that will delight young readers. While all aspects of mariachi are celebrated, it is the spirit of women and sisterhood in mariachi that is in the spotlight. Extensive back matter includes the history of mariachis and their traditions, the rise of women in mariachi, a glossary of terms, and a selected bibliography provide additional information on this rich musical tradition. An inspiring introduction to the world of mariachi and women's contributions to it. - Copyright 2024 Booklist.
