Full Text Reviews:

Booklist - 01/01/2017 Isabella lives on the island of Joya with her cartographer father. Nothing much has gone right there since the harsh governor took over. Still, she is best friends with his daughter, Lupe, though the girl can be obtuse when it comes to the workings of the island. When Lupe orders a classmate to bring her fruit from the forest and the girl is found murdered, Isabella lashes out at her friend. A hurt Lupe decides to run away to discover the truth of the incident, and a distressed Isabella, dressed as a boy, follows, with clues leading them into a literal maze of surprises. Their adventure is both frightening and mystical by turns, as the legends of the island seem to come to life around them. Using the cartography that underpins the story as a touchstone, Hargrave spins a magical world described in often soaring language, though her heroines remain refreshingly down to earth. Readers who like their fantasies mixed with everyday emotions will appreciate this, and an especially appealing cover will draw kids in. - Copyright 2017 Booklist.
