Booklist - 02/01/2026 Charise and Casey have been besties for years, even though Casey is two years older. However, things change drastically once Casey starts high school. Now she completely ignores Charise, passing her on the sidewalk as if she doesn’t even exist! So what do you do when your BFF isn’t really a forever friend? The answer’s simple: you look for a new one. And that’s exactly what Charise tries to do, only finding a new best friend isn’t as easy as it sounds. Although Charise is scared, she works up the courage to put herself out there, trying new things like dance, band, and even petting a guinea pig (and subsequently discovering a terrible allergy), all in hopes of finding that special new friend to fill the void left by Casey. Harper realistically captures the tricky parts of middle-school friendship in this memoir set in the 1970s, and Lucey’s warm, comical cartoon art nicely matches the emotional energy of the story. Hand this to tweens who love anything by Raina Telgemeier, Jerry Craft, or Jennifer L. Holm. - Copyright 2026 Booklist.
