School Library Journal - 08/01/2016 PreS-Gr 2—In this sequel to Mother Bruce, the bear and his quartet of goslings return home from winter migration to find that some mice have moved into his home and turned it into a hotel. Staying true to character, Bruce grumpily shoos the unwanted squatters out. However, a miscellaneous cast of woodland creatures keep turning up all over his home (including in the toilet). Not surprisingly, the next morning the mice return, managing to turn the geese into bellhops. When a rowdy group of elephant tourists show up, Bruce loses his cool and sends all the visitors out into the rain. Eventually Bruce's tender heart kicks in and he invites the mice back in to likely become additions to his adopted family. The illustrations are delightful, with lots of visual humor for those who pay attention to details. Subtle gags abound in this addition to the series. Students will laugh out loud at Bruce's misfortune and cheer when he has a change of heart. VERDICT This latest installment is sure to enchant a wide audience; a recommended purchase for any library collection.—Jasmine L. Booklist - 11/01/2016 If there is one thing grumpy bear Bruce doesn’t need, it’s more uninvited guests. Having begrudgingly assumed the mantel of “mother” to four geese in Mother Bruce (2015), he is now confronted with three enterprising mice who have turned Bruce’s home into a bustling woodland hotel while he and the geese were wintering in the South. Bruce is not pleased. Comical illustrations in saturated inks show riotous scenes (possum pillow fights), annoying behaviors (a frog lounging in the toilet, a beaver munching a wooden table), and a culinary disaster, all of which pair with Bruce’s grimaces and scowls, until a busload of elephants pushes him over the edge. The situational comedy of Higgins’ story is just right for young readers, who will giggle at the misunderstandings of the mice and Bruce’s mounting frustration. A mixture of full-page illustrations and scenes placed against a white backdrop (including several amusing close-ups of Bruce’s facial expressions) capture the chaotic action and are well suited for storytime sharing.
