School Library Journal - 02/01/2026 Gr 1–4—This amiable nonfiction picture book is filled with facts and interesting anecdotes designed to inspire readers to take a closer look at nature, beginning with some of the bird species with whom we share our world. Each segment is accompanied by vibrant watercolor collage illustrations of the birds themselves along with illustrated diagrams of bird anatomy, habits, habitats, and fun facts, all which serve to break up the text into easily digestible vignettes. The book also includes information about declining populations, migratory patterns, statistical data about each bird, including size, wingspan, and so much more. A list of additional resources for further study and an index round out the text. VERDICT This charming pictorial work will be devoured by budding ornithologists and nature lovers alike. Highly recommended for all nonfiction collections.—Jessica Marie - Copyright 2026 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
Booklist - 02/01/2026 Though there are countless species to choose from, 15 North American birds get their time to shine in this beautiful introductory book. There are several familiar faces—northern cardinals, blue jays, American robins—alongside some more unusual choices like the roseate spoonbill and northern mockingbird, but all the birds are treated with the same care and attention. A first look portrays each bird in a simple yet striking spread, accompanied by a few fast facts (measurements, geographic range). The following pages go into more depth, often answering specific questions about the species: How do woodpeckers avoid brain damage? What makes an eastern bluebird so blue? In between introductions, the sprightly text fills in general information about feathers, bill shapes, and calls, and the final pages reveal how climate change is affecting birds, and offer a guide on approaching injured animals. The elegant illustrations feature the birds in dynamic poses, and the layered, swirling textures bring forth color and life. Despite its theoretically narrow focus, it’s a wonderfully well-rounded introduction, replete with astonishing facts and approachable knowledge. - Copyright 2026 Booklist.
