Full Text Reviews:

School Library Journal - 06/01/2016 Gr 3 Up—This alphabet book represents the artist's whimsical free-association process as she wrote the letters over and over to discover the inherent drawings they contained. After creating the images, she "found the words to connect them. Words are a wonderful kind of glue." What follows are a series of unconnected phrases, scenarios, and moods ranging from the accessible ("D, Downpour"; "E, It's so easy to be with you") to the obscure, confusing, or strange (the page for the letter X shows a seated woman holding a child, with text reading, "I'm XX chromosome and I'm expanding"). The mixed-media collage illustrations are a balance of blocky cut paper and thick, expressionistic charcoal sketches in a muted primary palette. Because of the hand-drawn text and the heady conceptual connections, this is not a book for teaching or learning the alphabet, but a surreal artistic interpretation for older readers and art students. VERDICT This graphically smart and appealing offering would be a good choice for art schools and specialized collections and might serve as the basis for a drawing exercise.—Anna Haase Krueger, Ramsey County Library, MN - Copyright 2016 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
