Booklist - 02/01/2025 Bijan is a child obsessed with winning. The little boy turns ordinary, everyday activities into head-to-head competitions. At school, he draws a picture of a bird and declares, “I win!” which draws the bemusement of a classmate, who points out, “You can’t win at drawing birds, Bijan.” While brushing his teeth at home, he tells the mirror, “I win again.” The urge to be the best never rests—his bedtime mantra is “I always win!” Fantasy sequences in debut illustrator Tran’s effervescent digital artwork show the dreaming child stomping like a fire-breathing dragon, while “the other dragons had to deal with the flames.” Flying high in the sky, his shouts of triumph go unheard by the kids on the ground as they “danced and smiled and played together, without him.” When Bijan realizes his relentless pursuit to always be the unequivocal victor is hurting others as well as himself, he works towards winning at what truly matters: being a friend. This is a social-emotional learning picture book to champion. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
