Booklist - 07/01/2025 Maggie has been waiting all of her 14 years for a glimpse of the garden—and not the harvest garden just outside of her house, nor the greenhouse a little further on. She wants to see the garden, the locked one that provides her family with the incredible ingredients for their famous home-cooked meals. The perfect produce has magical effects on the mind, and though they used to share their transcendent table with townsfolk, they now reserve spots exclusively for wealthy clientele. An elated Maggie finally gets the go-ahead to make her first meal, but her garden visit is unlike any before, and it sets off a chain reaction that will uncover secrets stretching back generations and upend all of their lives. The spellbinding story expertly mixes magic with mystery, and the eccentric family, zany town traditions, and local folklore are a delight. Neurodivergent characters, including Maggie herself, are a welcome inclusion, and the inventive magic system feels particularly fresh.
