School Library Journal - 05/01/2012 Gr 1–3—Clearly written and well-organized introductions to notable authors and illustrators. Each spread typically features a page and a half of text and a photograph or illustration. Children will enjoy learning about the childhoods of these creators, and the books have enough information to be enlightening, but not so much as to be overwhelming. "Elements of Art" boxes add interest and visual appeal. With a square trim shape and graceful, simple language, this appealing package proves, again and again, that youthful doodles can blossom into real-life careers. (Each book makes sure to mention the schooling that helped each subject attain success.) Brian Selznick recounts how the artist turned a childhood obsession with science fiction into an early job as a bookstore employee, where he took home 15 to 20 books per night to read, before finding later glory with The Invention of Hugo Cabret (2007).
