Booklist - 11/01/2019 The sequel to I, Crocodile (1999) picks right up with the crocodile hiding in the Paris sewers after narrowly escaping Napoleon’s clutches. When he hears that Napoleon is touring Italy, he sneaks a ride with the caravan and soon arrives in Venice, where he’s lured out of hiding by the smell of ragù alla Bolognese. Soon, costumed revelers commend him on his realistic crocodile costume and invite him to the grand ball in the palazzo, where he stuns them all with his dramatic flair for Egyptian dancing. When Napoleon interrupts the ball to seize him, the revelers come to the crocodile’s aid and whisk him to safety. Puybaret seamlessly continues this book, as its creator died before its completion, using Marcellino's existing text, page layouts, and partial illustrations. Those involved in the project deserve to be commended for both its reverence to Marcellino's vision and its success as a unified piece of art. Everything, from the crocodile’s familiar expressions to the wordless two-page spread of masked tango dancing to the subtle texture of the cover, is classy and striking. - Copyright 2019 Booklist.
