Summary:
With nine eyes, three ears, one arm, and six wheels, Oppy explored the mysterious terrain of Mars, gathering samples, snapping photos, and discovering vast craters. Everywhere held new and exciting surprises! Oppy called home to Earth often with new images, until one day a storm on Mars blew in and changed everything.

Full Text Reviews:

Booklist - 08/01/2022 The story of Opportunity begins with scientists who wanted to send astronauts to Mars. Facing multiple challenges, they built a robotic explorer instead, a rover designed to travel on the planet’s surface, make observations, collect samples, and communicate with them on Earth. They named her Opportunity and sent her to Mars. Expected to last for three months, she explored the planet and reported results for 15 years. Written from the viewpoint of those who sent her into space, the text refers to her as a friend and regards her as an amiable, near-sentient being. When a sand storm her covers her solar panel, she can no longer function. Her colleagues on Earth send her “a love song, a lullaby, a kiss” and think of Opportunity sleeping on the red planet until people travel there and waken her. Li uses form, color, and composition effectively in the digital illustrations. An appended time line identifies landers and rovers that have traveled to Mars. This simply written, visually appealing picture book introduces an intrepid space traveler. - Copyright 2022 Booklist.

School Library Journal - 09/30/2022 K-Gr 3—For aspiring rocket scientists and for those curious about Mars, this book is everything they need. It is an absolutely charming introduction to Oppy, also known as Opportunity, the Mars rover. The illustrations bring Oppy to life and help explain the very complex science behind planetary travel. Readers gain a clear understanding of what scientists hoped to find on Mars and how they used a rover to conduct their studies. Readers even get a glimpse of the scientists' emotional responses and challenges. The book provides a clear path for discussions of space science with kids to spark their imaginations, offering lesson connections in science, math, ELA, and more. VERDICT A book that will open children's eyes to science, exploration, and the opportunities across the universe.—Darby Wallace - Copyright 2022 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
