Booklist - 08/01/2025 Their escape from the dismal Versagenschule (School for Failures) in Ügottobekiddingme, Austria, leads to a fresh round of mad-science adventures for foundling “sisters” Gertrude, Dee-Dee, and Eugenia Porch at the posh Purple Pearl Hotel on the shores of New England’s Lake Kagloopy. “Mad science,” writes McKinnon in the guise of fictive narrator Dr. G. Edwina Candlestank, “is more than brains in jars and lightning rods (though it is VERY MUCH those things as well),” and here the sisters must not only learn to see through the eyes of a potato but brave hazards ranging from deadly Librarian Falcons to an entire lake set volcanically aboil in a desperate, doomed effort to keep the nefarious Krenetics Research Association from snatching the fabulous treasure for which the hotel is named. Will they succeed, even with beloved, intrepid schoolmistress Millicent Quibb on their side? Readers will be right to doubt, but any who enjoy tales featuring melodramatic typography, gothic illustrations, chancy creatures like Praying Mantis Bunnies, people and places with silly names, and resourceful orphans battling hopeless odds will happily dive in. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
