School Library Journal - 07/12/2024 K-Gr 2—This set introduces sports-related jobs that young fans may not know much about. There's not a lot of information, but the books provide basic examples of these occupations with strong visual support. Large, appealing photographs show different aspects of each job, drawing on several sports per title. A few short sentences per spread describe the scenes depicted in the photographs without specific details. In Coaches, the text reads: "They start the game. Tom drops the puck!" The accompanying photo shows a hockey face-off. Mascots shows a fun variety of mascots in action, from a place-kicking lion to the Phillie Phanatic interacting with fans in the stands, though readers don't get to see any of the actual people or details of the costumes. Each book concludes with an encouraging word to children who might be interested in the career. The volumes include a review activity, picture glossary, index, and further reading in the back matter. VERDICT Consider for larger sports collections.—Steven Engelfried - Copyright 2024 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.

Booklist - 07/01/2024 The new Beyond the Players series (5 titles) use very basic text and short sentences to introduce very young readers to sports professionals who are not athletes but still contribute to the experience of watching a game. Author Allan Morey briefly introduces the topic of each book and provides some examples of what that person does. Refs and umps “know the rules” and “keep games fair.” Because of the basic level of these texts, they rely on stock photos, occasionally with labels, to complete the information. Readers who are curious to learn more about these professions may want to seek out more detailed, higher-level texts that can provide additional information. These books are designed to be usable for nonfiction study in school. The front matter provides prompts for parents and educators to use before, during, and after reading. The back matter includes a brief recap titled either “On the Job” or “Part of the Team,” a picture glossary, a short index, and directions to use a specific internet search engine to learn more. A basic introduction to an interesting topic not usually covered at this level. - Copyright 2024 Booklist.
