Full Text Reviews:

Booklist - 12/01/2012 Mould’s latest novel is drawn directly from Dickens: a young orphan named Pip is on the run from an evil master. But middle-grade horror fans won’t need to get the allusions to Great Expectations to enjoy this slim chapter book’s gruesome details and wild adventure. Pip dreams of sitting by the fire with his parents, but instead he is trying to escape kidnappers through catacombs beneath the city while above, “rain lashes the streets and the wind hurls itself recklessly around the tiles and chimneys.” The forest at night, with wood witches and threatening beasts, is just as scary as the urban streets. In this first volume in the Spindlewood Tales trilogy, small black-and-white illustrations showcase the monsters who hate children, including Roach, with two pairs of arms like an upright insect, and other snarling, scowling “cold and cutthroat” predators in Hangman’s Hollow. Just right for a spooky read-aloud. - Copyright 2012 Booklist.

School Library Journal - 03/01/2013 Gr 4–6—When 10-year-old Pip is deemed too old for the orphanage and sold into labor on what he fears is a pirate ship, he stows away in the caravan of the Stage Fright Theatre Company. When the caravan stops, he finds himself in Hangman's Hollow, a place he thought only existed in dark, twisted fairy tales. It's a desolate place where children are hidden away lest they be stolen by the wood witches of the surrounding forest. Pip immediately draws the attention of the wood witches' servants and finds himself fighting for not just his life, but also for the lives of two more stolen children. Mould's eerie black-and-white sketches enhance the story and add to the tone of mystery and danger. A short, suspenseful tale.—Kelly Roth, Bartow County Public Library, Cartersville, GA - Copyright 2013 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
