Booklist - 08/01/2024 A dog named Gertie comes to live with Sammy, a boy who is confident that he knows what all dogs love. But what does Gertie love? Sammy tries many activities with her, hoping to answer that question. Does she enjoy squeaky toys, hugs, chasing balls, or hanging out with other dogs at the park? No, none of those. Later, as they sit quietly, side by side, Sammy remembers feeling anxious, unsure, and shy at times, and wonders whether some dogs might feel the same. Back at home, he makes a special hideout for Gertie: a comfy cushion under a table draped with a cloth covering. She loves it! In the end, he discovers that what she loves best is simply being with Sammy. Curious, caring, and patient, Sammy makes a wonderful child character. While this picture book may be useful in classrooms where neurodivergence and autism are under discussion, Kalla’s concise, quiet narrative and expressive, engaging illustrations primarily tell a straightforward “boy meets dog” story with clarity and great child appeal. - Copyright 2024 Booklist.
