Booklist - 02/01/2023 Hoping to give President Andrew Jackson a gift that would bring renown to his New York farming region, Colonel Thomas S. Meacham plots to produce an enormous wheel of cheese. Over the course of many days, the cheese takes on a truly colossal form, weighing over 1,400 pounds and measuring four feet in diameter. Off it goes to the capital by way of a town parade, a meandering boat trip, and a carriage ride to the White House. The enormous cheese is placed in the entrance hall and nibbled on for more than a year, until a hot summer results in a truly terrible odor permeating the building. The only solution is to finish off the cheese for good, and the president opens the White House to the public, attracting nearly 10,000 cheese-hungry visitors. The appealing story is both a crash course in cheese making and an entertaining historical account, with lively illustrations wonderfully conveying the action and the hilarity of the developing odor. An entertaining ode to a funny footnote in American history. - Copyright 2023 Booklist.
