Booklist - 04/01/2021 This inviting entry in the Simple Science Experiments series (4 titles) offers 10 demonstrations of a variety of properties of light and sound. After an opening section providing tips (including when to ask for help from an adult), a list of materials, and a brief introduction to the science, the attention turns to the activities. Photos of each stage of the demonstrations help make the steps crystal clear, and explanations for what kids should observe at the end of each activity help solidify the concepts. The materials are all fairly basic—plastic straws, card stock, jars, food coloring—and the activities, including making a pinhole camera, comparing the speeds of light and sound, and building a string instrument from a box and rubber bands, are all easily achievable. A fairly robust pick for science-activity collections. - Copyright 2021 Booklist.
