Brief quotes from diary entries and letters appear throughout, providing context (for instance, Harriet Tubman offers information on the devastating effects of slavery) and making important historical figures accessible. Maps and reproductions, as well as the sepia pages, which give the volumes an appropriately old-fashioned air, add to the tone.
