Booklist - 10/01/2025 Disasters are a perpetual source of curiosity for kids, and this book from the Danger Files series offers fresh ways of learning the facts, identifying the causes, and realizing the impacts of five historic catastrophes: the Great Chicago Fire, the sinking of the Titanic, the crash of the Hindenburg, the Boston Molasses Flood, and the early twentieth century's Spanish flu pandemic. Each episode is presented as a criminal investigation, with plenty of data for readers to analyze: historic and social context, background information, logistical facts (strengths and weaknesses, limits, contemporary understandings of technologies), facts, profiles of significant historical figures, and simulated eyewitness reports, often attributed to child survivors. This information appears as scribbled notes, typed-up reports, and paper-clipped snippets integrated into time-line narratives as events unfold, supported by numerous drawings and sketches. Each disaster also offers a simple scientific-inquiry activity: Does fire need oxygen to burn? How are germs transmitted? Chapters end with safety measures put into place to avoid repeat occurrences; copious chapter notes are provided. This is sure to be popular with researchers, browsers, and catastrophe-minded leisure readers. - Copyright 2025 Booklist.
