Booklist - 07/23/2023 Reichs and Gaylord's tween take on the origin of the antagonism between Superman and Lex Luthor begins with an uncharacteristically power-hungry Clark in high school, who's just fine with using his powers (discretely) to get ahead—a choice that disappoints his father. When Luthorcorp holds a contest for a summer internship, Clark cheats to win, and when he meets his fellow interns—including Lex—he continues to covertly boost his abilities. While initially Clark and Lex hit it off, as the competition heats up and it becomes clear Luthorcorp has ulterior motives, the two teens become more and more at odds. Jerry Gaylord's character designs have comic book superhero flair with a youthful look, and Penelope Gaylord's bold and bright colors really shine, especially when portraying the otherworldly technologies at Luthorcorp. The fresh take, bright art, and concise story grounded in a theme of conflict with fathers for both Clark and Lex will appeal to readers still getting into superhero comics, while the classic rivalry between Superman and Lex Luthor—a cornerstone of the character arcs—will satisfy fans of the characters. - Copyright 2023 Booklist.
