Booklist - 07/01/2024 Efforts to clear Cambodia of the vast numbers of land mines and other buried explosives left in the wake of the twentieth century’s wars are still ongoing, and this tribute to the campaign joins Jodie Parachini’s HeroRat! (2022) in focusing on two heroic “deminers” in particular: Cambodian specialist Malen and her giant African pouched rat, Magawa. Here, with Lee’s painted scenes (switching to photos in the back matter) to illustrate, the authors describe in detail how both the people and the rats are trained, how Malen and her colleagues bond with their animals, and how they carefully and systematically stake out and sweep suspected minefields. The authors and illustrator add personal experiences and perspectives at the end, also adding further details about Magawa’s achievements and later life. According to the time line, this “HeroRAT” and his two- and four-legged helpers have cleared millions of square yards—good work, but thoughtful readers will understand that it’s just a start. - Copyright 2024 Booklist.
