Booklist - 04/01/2019 Bryan, a Rossetti fan, illustrates 13 of this Victorian poet's works using intricate cut-paper collages. Included are familiar standards (Who Has Seen the Wind?) and musings on nature (Wrens and Robins in the Hedge) and family (Mother Shake the Cherry Tree), as well as nods to whimsy (If a Pig Wore a Wig). Each poem is presented in a single spread, employing a range of compositions and vivid colors. Some illustrations are relatively simple framed prints, as in Kookoorookoo! Kookoorookoo!, which depicts a red, purple, and yellow rooster posed in front of a bright yellow sun. Other poems, such as Color, connect several smaller illustrations to depict various lines of the verse. Still others, including The Wind Has Such a Rainy Sound, portray complex scenes that encourage a closer look to take in all the details. The paper cuts themselves are particularly detailed, adding texture and shading to the finished art. Bryan's signature collage style is bright and detailed, and works to highlight the poems. The selected poems are accessible to young readers and are reminiscent of nursery rhymes with their easy-to-identify rhythm and rhyme schemes. The subject matter is also familiar, covering dreams, the natural world, and family. Children will be surprised to find that the poetry was written in the 1800s. The detail and careful execution in the cut-paper art are impressive. Young readers will likely find inspiration from both the poetry and the artwork.
