Booklist - 04/01/2019 This appealing biography from the DK Life Stories series (6 titles) introduces Katherine Johnson as a Black child whose love of math was encouraged by her parents, teachers, and professors. Despite her prodigious talent and college degree, job opportunities were limited for Black women in the 1940s and 1950s. But when she worked as a “human computer” for NACA (later NASA) during the space race, she earned recognition for her knowledge, meticulous work, and leadership skills. While the book's period photos offer realistic views of America and the space program during the twentieth century, Ager’s expressive line drawings with color washes add a distinctive look and tone to the book. An informative and engaging choice for kids who have seen the movie Hidden Figures and want to know more about Katherine Johnson. - Copyright 2019 Booklist.
