Booklist - 02/01/2026 *Starred Review* In this literal fish-out-of-water story, a fishboy wanders into a town known for its local cryptid, “The Beast of Barnacle Bay.” Hiding in the school, he quickly dons a disguise and calls himself Sashimi, a name he comically cut out of a poster to slap on a student ID. Joey may be onto his secret, but he doesn’t want anything to do with Sashimi, since he’s already bullied enough at school and Sashimi is . . . weird. Soon, though, the two form an uneasy friendship and embark on adventures around town. Jokes are packed into nearly every page, ranging from the typical childish jokes about spitballs and underwear to genuinely funny jokes about school-funding shortages and the strange town history of Barnacle Bay. There are enough unanswered questions about character backstories and motives that there's groundwork for further installments. Santat’s signature artistic style is on full display, though with chunkier outlines and more outsized reactions, which makes star-of-the-show Sashimi come alive with outrageous and comically creepy facial expressions. Santat is a master, with a wide variety of titles to his name, and this latest madcap adventure shows off the uproarious side of his decades of skill and talent. Dog Man fans looking for their next favorite series will line up for this. - Copyright 2026 Booklist.
