School Library Journal - 06/01/2026 Gr 2–5β€”It's time to head back to Barnacle Bay for another day of hijinks and lessons with Sashimi, the sea creature. While on his first field trip, the giggling guppy can't help but play the clown for his friends, leading to his bus banishment and wandering on foot. Disruption descends into a chaotically funny manhunt, which turns into a full-town frenzy to find and save the missing child. It takes silly coincidences and the quick wits of his growing family of friends to keep this fish from floundering. Like the works of Dav Pilkey, this title relishes in its juvenile humor. A fart joke becomes a schoolyard-worthy fart sequence of epic proportions, fully supported by an art style built on exaggerated expressions. Young fans of this comedic form will find themselves floored. But the shenanigans don't end there, going so hard that Sashimi's comic gets thrown into a new medium: felt. In an educational portion of the book, Santat even describes the basic felting process. Other lessons come in the form of brief subject asides as Sashimi encounters new things. While moments of curiosity and friendship are treated respectfully, Santat always envelopes them within the comedic tone of the rest of the book. VERDICT When Santat sends a sea creature to school and silliness of this degree ensues, librarians should start fishing for copies.β€”Rachel Forbes - Copyright 2026 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
