School Library Journal - 05/01/2019 Gr 2–4—Characteristics of animal pairs demonstrate the concept of symbiosis to younger readers. Opening pages describe the creatures interacting with each other, followed by a couple of spreads devoted to individual creature profiles. The concluding section offers a bit more about the ways they help each other. The text provides enough information to convey the key facts without getting overly detailed. Some more advanced terms, including "symbiosis," are not defined within the text but do appear in the glossary. Inset photos provide solid support. For example, a spread in Cape Buffalo and Oxpeckers shows a group of oxpeckers attacking pests on a Cape buffalo. The opposite page features a close-up of one bird chomping on an insect. Insets include a habitat map, simple animal profiles, and a side-by-side table that lists the key elements of each symbiotic relationship. VERDICT Solid introductions to symbiosis featuring some animals not often covered in kids' books. - Copyright 2019 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
