School Library Journal - 12/01/2022 Gr 3–6—Cordelia, 12, lives in the Everglades, a land filled with magical creatures. Her dad, Oziris, is the leader of the community. One night, Oziris dies in his sleep. With his death, a curse falls over everyone and dangerous creatures begin to take over. To save the community, Cordelia, her friend Larkin, and their little brothers Zephyr and Dash must find a witch who wields dark resurrection magic. Along the way, they must learn to master their own magical powers, defeat the creatures, and deal with their grief. Will they succeed? Creating alternating points of view in Cordelia and Larkin, Sebastian builds an intriguing, immersive setting intermixed with magic and adventure. The worldbuilding is believable; the characters aren't well developed but are engaging and relatable. The writing style moves smoothly and draws readers into the story. The humorous plot is imaginative; it's full of adventure. Characters in the story are presumed white. VERDICT Fans of Brandon Mull's books will want to pick this unique novel up.—Kira Moody - Copyright 2022 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
