Booklist - 08/01/2024 Follow a large cast of characters through a forest's food chain—and what happens when prey gets away! A cricket who munches the grass beneath the trees, a mouse who pounces on the cricket, the red snake that swallows the mouse . . . and so on, as the day grows and myriad animals make their contribution to the food chain. The cumulative, poetic text is rich with detail on the landscape, the creatures that make it their home, and the activities they scurry through every day. Sometimes prey animals escape, and children will delight in this good fortune as well as the fun, ever-lengthening portions that tell the story of each critter’s fate. Neal’s beautiful, muted primary color images, in mixed media that was finished digitally, showcase the landscape and animals in just enough detail to feel spacious and clean but still keep young readers engaged and pointing out little features. A closing glossary explains terms such as “food chain” and “temperate deciduous forest” and offers more facts on the book’s animals. A gorgeous must-have for home and library shelves. - Copyright 2024 Booklist.
