Booklist - 04/01/2017 After the Golden State Warriors drafted basketball phenom Stephen Curry in 2009, he overcame early injuries, improved his skills, and helped them win the 2015 NBA championship. During the 2015–16 season, the Warriors earned an amazing record of 73 wins and 9 losses, while Curry set the NBA record for three-point shots (402) and became the first player ever to be named MVP by unanimous vote. Written in an accessible style, this Junior Biographies series title also includes information about Curry’s family life and charitable works. The colorful pages offer a fair amount of information as well as many clearly reproduced photos and boxes featuring quotes and fast facts. While biographies of active athletes have a short shelf life, a reasonably up-to-date book on Curry is currently a staple for sports collections. - Copyright 2017 Booklist.
School Library Journal - 04/01/2017 Gr 3–5—Famous African Americans representing the arts, literature, and sports. Each volume begins with a list of words to know and then segues into a chronological exploration of the subject's life. While personal lives are covered, the focus is primarily on careers. Bright, colorful photos accompany the texts along with "Fun Fact" and "…Says" sidebars. However, the quotes featured in "…Says" are not sourced. The narrative is lively and the volume on Misty Copeland is especially inspiring, though generalizations do occur: there was "some racism in ballet's history." VERDICT The popularity of the subjects along with the eye-catching layouts makes this series a top contender for pleasure reading and report writing. - Copyright 2017 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
