School Library Journal - 05/15/2026 Toddler-K—Stutzman explores the world through the eyes of Hugo, a dog, and a pale-skinned, blonde girl. The story opens with the child encouraging Hugo to start the perfect day with a stretch and a yawn before heading out on an adventure. What follows is a series of encounters in nature that all start well, then end with the refrain "uh-oh, Hugo." But the narrator and the intrepid dog never let the mishaps get them down. The earthy primary-color backgrounds work seamlessly with the up-close interactions Hugo must create an upbeat and inviting visual experience. A fun visual gag of a lingering green cloud after an encounter with a skunk will add plenty of giggles to this sweet story. VERDICT A recommended title for animal lovers and kids needing reassurance that the perfect day may not look quite perfect.—Kelcy Davis - Copyright 2026 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.

Booklist - 06/01/2026 This fun, color-rich, picture book follows the delightful ups and downs in the life of Hugo, an adorable and endlessly curious dog. With simple sentences, playful onomatopoeia, and vibrant illustrations, the story invites young readers into Hugo’s world as he explores with enthusiasm and wonder. Not every moment goes his way; at one point, Hugo mistakenly grabs a snake instead of a stick, but his resilience quickly shines through when he finds a better stick and bounds happily onward. From running joyfully through fields of flowers to being chased by buzzing bees, Hugo’s day is full of excitement, surprises, and small challenges. Gentle, positive, moments balance the chaos, like when a bird seems to sing just for him. The story closes with a comforting scene of Hugo snuggled up with his owner, ending the day on a peaceful note. This charming book is perfect for teaching young learners about perseverance and emotional balance, showing that even tough moments can turn around with a little optimism and curiosity. - Copyright 2026 Booklist.
