Booklist - 04/15/2022 In this contemporary graphic adaptation of the popular children’s novel Anne of Green Gables, Anne is now a Black tween who is fostered into siblings’ Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert’s home in West Philly. In this adaptation, Anne’s move to the Cuthberts’ household gets off to a somewhat challenging start. This causes Marilla to question whether they are equipped, positioned, or suited to parent the spirited and strong-minded teenager well. However, with the help of a therapist, Marilla and Anne work to be more adaptable toward and patient with each other, and over time things turn around. With Marilla fully committed to being more patient and understanding and Matt’s strong encouragement and support, the two manage to create something that Anne has longed for: a family. And Anne thrives, developing close friendships, experiencing her first love, and succeeding in school. Weir and Haynes’ modern take does a solid job at recasting the classic with updated plot points that will appeal to young readers. Supported by colorful, meaningfully expressive artwork, this graphic novel presents a beloved tale with a fresh perspective. - Copyright 2022 Booklist.
