Booklist - 08/08/2023 Now fully translated into Spanish, Yang's acclaimed picture book brings the true story of the author's experience living in a Thai refugee camp with her family to Spanish-speaking readers. In any language, Kalia's story is one of resilience and youthful awe. Following the author’s memories of her early life, readers get a glimpse into a child's perspective of daily life in a camp, one of the games between cousins, the shared strife of hunger and uncertainty, and ultimately the hope of peace. Along with such a moving true story, Wada's artwork underpins the poignant reality of Yang's words in watercolor depictions of Kalia's memories in muted yellows and bold oranges that help unfold the story. The rich illustrations serve as the meat and bones of this Spanish telling, since the translation loses a bit of the magic from Yang's English prose, and concise sentences of the original translate into slightly longer compositions.
