Booklist - 10/01/2018 Immigration is a particularly hot-button topic, and this installment in the Immigration Today series (4 titles) offers not only an approachable overview but some illuminating personal stories from immigrants as well. The profiles of two families, each enduring years of bureaucratic hurdles along with real peril in their home countries, do a wonderful job of illustrating why and how some people immigrate to the U.S., and add helpful context to the introductory chapters. Appropriately, Yomtov covers Donald Trump’s 2017 travel ban, which directly affected a family featured, and while the tone is fairly detached, students should easily form their own opinions, though they might need to look elsewhere for more comprehensive information. While the misuse of Afghani to describe people from Afghanistan is unfortunate, this introduction nonetheless offers some useful tools. - Copyright 2018 Booklist.
