Controversial Issues in School Librarianship: Divergent Perspectives (cover art)

Controversial Issues in School Librarianship: Divergent Perspectives by Nancy Everhart. Published by Linworth, 2003. 150 pages.

Nancy Everhart, an Associate Professor in charge of the school library media program at St. John's University, Jamaica, N.Y., presents the pros and cons of nine separate topics facing school library media specialists. The topics range from requirements for becoming a school librarian to virtual school libraries. The presentation of each issue is deliberate and well structured, explores divergent perspectives, and includes thoughtful discussion questions, projects, and additional resources. By utilizing a practical format, the author has created a book that is not only useful to the seasoned school librarian, but makes an excellent reference for the beginning librarian as well.

Everhart has done an excellent job in presenting the divergent perspectives with little bias. She guides the reader through the controversial topics in a manner that allows one to come to his or her own conclusions. Although no definitive solutions to the tough issues facing school library media specialists will be found, this book certainly will spur thought provoking conversation.
