Lois Lenski Birthplace: Springfield, OH USA Author Biography Lois Lenski was born October 14, 1893 in Springfield, Ohio. She died in Florida in 1974. Lenski was one of five children of a Lutheran minister. She graduated from Ohio State University and then studied at the Arts Students League of New York and the Westminster School of Art in London. The author started her career lettering and painting greeting cards before she was hired to illustrate books for the publisher John Lane. She married artist Arthur Covey and they had a son, Stephen. Lenski is best known for the over one hundred books she wrote and illustrated. She also illustrated fifty-seven books for other authors. "Indian Captive" was a Newbery Honor Book in 1942. "Strawberry Girl" was the Newbery Medal Winner of 1946 and an ALA Book of the Year. After a severe illness in 1952 Lenski switched, almost exclusively, to writing poetry.
