Author Biography

   Julius Lester was born January 27, 1939 in St. Louis, Missouri. Mr. Lester died January 18, 2018. His father was a Methodist minister. The author wanted to be a musician as a child. He got a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from Fisk University. Lester was involved in the Civil Rights movement in the 60's. As a musician he recorded two albums. He produced and hosted a radio show for eight years and a TV show for two years. The author  taught at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst for over 30 years.
   Lester wrote all types of books, from novels to poetry to picture books to nonfiction. "To Be a Slave" was a Newbery Honor Book in 1969. "John Henry" was a Caldecott Honor Book,  a Boston Globe-Horn Book Picture Book Award Winner and an ALA Notable Children's Book in 1995. "Day of Tears" was the 2005 Coretta Soctt King Author Winner.
