Author Biography

   Gerald McDermott was born in Detroit, Michigan on January 31, 1941. McDermott died December 26, 2012. His parents enrolled him in art school at the age of four. He then went to a special high school for the arts. McDermott received a degree from the Pratt Institute.  He started working in animated films on folklore and only later adapted them into books. He was briefly married to the painter Beverly Brodsky.
   McDermott was best known for his picture books based on folk tales. "Anansi the Spider" was a Caldecott Honor Book in 1973, as was "Raven" in 1994.  "Arrow to the Sun" won the Caldecott Medal in 1975.
