Author Biography

     Jane Leslie Conly was born in 1948 in Leesburg, Virginia. She graduated from Smith College in 1971 and from the Johns Hopkins Writing Seminars Program in 1974. Conly has worked as a camp director and as a mortgage counselor. The author has two children, a daughter named Eliza and a son named Will.  Both of her parents were writers. Her father won the Newbery Medal in 1971 for "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH" under the pen name Robert C. O'Brien. The author's hobbies include fishing, canoeing, camping, gardening, and listening to jazz. 
      Best known for her Rats of NIMH books, Conly has been awarded the Jane Addams Children's Book Award and the Edgar Allen Poe Award.  "Crazy Lady" was a Newbery Honor Book.  "Trout Summer" was an ALA Notable Book.  "While No One Was Watching" was a Boston Globe/Horn Book Honor Book.
