Author Biography

     Meindert De Jong was born on March 4, 1906 in Wierum, The Netherlands. He was educated at Calvin College. His hobbies included reading, playing cribbage, listening to music and going for long walks. 
     De Jong is best known for writing fiction. His books have won numerous awards including a Newbery Medal for "Wheel on the School" in 1955 and Newbery Honors for "Shadrach" and "Hurry Home, Candy" both in 1954, "The House of Sixty Fathers" in 1957, and "Along Came a Dog" in 1959.   De Jong retired from writing in 1986 and died on July 16, 1991.
