She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago and a Master's in Special Education from the University of Washington. Kerley has worked as a baker, bartender, English teacher, ESL teacher and Special Education aide. Much of her teaching was in Nepal with the Peace Corps. The author and her husband, Scott, an engineer, have a daughter Anna, an old dog named Bingo and a fat cat, Apollo. Her hobbies include travel, biking, hiking, cooking and the banjo. She also enjoys author visits. The author is also known as Barbara Kelly. Kerley is known for her nonfiction picture books and fiction chapter books. "Songs of Papa's Island" was a 1996 ALA Notable Children's Book. "The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins" was a 2002 Caldecott Honor Book, an ALA Notable Children's Book and an Orbis Pictus Honor Book.
