Author Biography

    William Steig was born in Brooklyn, New York on November 14, 1907. He died October 3, 2003.  He was a New Yorker cartoonist since 1930 and also did some sculpting in wood.  The author and his fourth wife Jean, an artist, had three children, Jeremy a musician, Lucy a painter and Maggie an actress.
    Steig is best known for his picture books.  "Sylvester and the Magic Pebble" won the 1970 Caldecott Award.  "Amos & Boris" was a 1971 ALA Notable Book and a SLJ Best Book.  "Dominic" was the 1972 Christopher Winner and an ALA Notable Book.  "The Real Thief" was a 1973 ALA Notable Book, as was "Farmer Palmer's Wagon Ride" in 1974 and "Caleb & Kate" in 1977.  "Abel's Island" was a 1977 Newbery Honor Book and an ALA Notable Book. "Amazing Bone" was a 1977 Caldecott Honor Book, an ALA Notable Book and a SLJ Best Book.  "Doctor De Soto" was a 1983 Newbery Honor Book, an ALA Notable Book and a SLJ Best Book.  "Spinky Sulks" was a 1988 ALA Notable Book.  "Shrek" was a 1990 SLJ Best Book. The author died on October 3, 2003.
