Author Biography

    Marcia Brown was born in Rochester, New York on July 13, 1918.  Ms. Brown died April 28, 2015 at her home in Laguna Hills, CA. She attended New York State College for Teachers and New York University at Albany. Later in her life she studied at Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts in China. The author  worked at a resort hotel and as a children's librarian. Her hobbies included music, travel, ballet and learning Chinese.
    Brown will be remembered for her picture books. "Cinderella" won the 1955 Caldecott Medal.  "Once a Mouse ..." won the 1962 Caldecott Medal.  "Shadow" won the 1983 Caldecott Medal.  The following were all Caldecott Honor Books: "Stone Soup" in 1948, "Henry, Fisherman" in 1950,  "Dick Whittington and His Cat" in 1951, "Skipper John's Cook" in 1952, "Puss in Boots" in 1953,  and  "Steadfast Tin Soldier"  in 1954. The author received the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal in 1992 for her lasting contribution to literature for children.
