He was educated at Cooper Union Art School and at Columbia University. Bryan served in the U.S. Army in World War II and has worked as a teacher and an artist. One of his hobbies is designing dolls. The author is best known for his picture books, sometimes with African American themes. Bryan received the Parents' Choice Award in 1980. He received the Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award in 1981 for "Beat the Story-Drum, Pum-Pum," a Coretta Scott King Author Honor in 1983 for "I'm Going to Sing," a Coretta Scott Illustrator Honor in 1998 for "Ashley Bryan's ABC of African American Poetry" and again in 1992 for "All Night, All Day."
