She studied ballet at an art school in San Francisco. Burton worked as a lifeguard and swimming instructor and as an art teacher. The author and her husband, George, had two sons, Aristides and Michael. Her husband was a sculptor, as is her son Aristides. Burton is best known for her picture books.
