Author Biography

    Virginia Lee Burton was born in Newton Center, Massachusetts on August 3, 1909 and died in 1968.  She studied ballet at an art school in San Francisco.  Burton worked as a lifeguard and swimming instructor and as an art teacher.  The author and her husband, George, had two sons, Aristides and Michael.  Her husband was a sculptor, as is her son Aristides.
    Burton is best known for her picture books.  "The Little House" won the 1943 Caldecott Medal.  "The Song of Robin Hood" was a 1948 Caldecott Honor Book.
