Author Biography

   Betsy Cromer Byars was born August 7, 1928 in Charlotte, North Carolina.  Byars died on February 26, 2020. She received a degree in English from Queens College. The author and her husband, Ed, had four children, Nan, Guy, Betsy Duffey and Laurie Myers. Laurie also writes children's books. Betsy and Ed enjoyed flying gliders as a hobby.
   Byars will be remembered for her novels. "Summer of the Swans" was the 1971 Newbery Winner.  "Night Swimmers" won the 1981 American Book Award. "Wanted...Mud Blossom" won the 1992 Edgar Award. The author received the Regina Medal.
