Author Biography

     Arnold Adoff was born in New York City July 16, 1935.  He received B.A. and Master Degrees from Columbia University.  Adoff worked as a teacher before writing full time.  The author and his wife, the deceased writer Virginia Hamilton, have two grown children, Leigh Hamilton and Jaime Levi.  Adoff's interests are history and music and he does make school visits.
    The author is best known for writing poems and compiling anthologies of poetry.  His "I Am the Darker Brother" was an ALA Notable Children's Book in 1968, as was "Malcolm X" in 1970, "Black Out Loud" in 1970 and "My Black Me" in 1974.  "Ma Nda La" was both an ALA Notable Children's Book and a SLJ Best Book in 1971.
