Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Birthplace: Portland, ME USA Author Biography Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born in Portland, Maine on February 27, 1807. He died in Cambridge, Massachusetts on March 24, 1882. Longfellow started school at a very young age and when he graduated from Bowdoin College at 19 they created a professorship of modern languages and hired him. The author later taught at Harvard University. His first wife, Mary, died in 1834 while accompanying him to Europe to study literature. He and his second wife, Frances, had two boys and three girls. Longfellow is best known for his poetry, often inspired by native legends and the American landscape. He was one of the first Americans to be accepted in Europe as a major poet.
