She attended the Cincinnati Academy of Arts and then worked as a teacher and as a magazine illustrator. The author is the parent of two grown children, Kim and Allen. Her hobbies included pottery, gardening, and woodworking. Alexander is best known for her picture books. "Bobo's Dream" was a SLJ Best Book in 1970. "Nobody Asked Me If I Wanted a Baby Sister" was an ALA Children's Book of International Interest in 1971. "I'll Protect You From the Jungle Beasts" won the Christopher Award in 1973.
