Author Biography

   Gloria Whelan was born in Detroit, Michigan on November 23, 1923.  She received a Master's Degree in Social Work from the University of Michigan.  Whelan worked as a social worker and she also taught a college-level American Literature course.  The author and her husband, Joseph,  have two children and several grandchildren.
   Whelan is best known for her fiction.  She was Michigan's Author of the Year in 1998.  "Homeless Bird" won the National Book Award in 2000 and it was an 2001 ALA Notable Children's Book.
